Travel Award Criteria (How to Apply)

Overseas Study Fellowship

In keeping with the principal goals of the SSA, which include promoting research into stroke, the SSA calls for applications for an Overseas Travelling Fellowship, as support for a young researcher seeking research experience or study overseas. The $5,000 fellowship is to defray the costs of travel and accommodation.

The Fellowship is available to medical and non-medical members of the SSA. To be eligible, applicants must have either secured a training or research position in stroke or invitation to study or participate in research in stroke, at a recognised institution, of at least one month’s duration beginning in the 2011 calendar year.

The application should include a curriculum vitae, details of previous training and research experience, a letter of support from the applicant’s current supervisor, the names and contact details of two other referees, and a letter from the overseas institution confirming and describing the overseas program or appointment.

Applications will be considered by a Stroke Society of Australasia appointed sub-committee. Previous winners of the award may not re-apply within five years of their previous award. The sub-committee will prioritise applications for those either in training positions or those within 5 years of graduation from a professional degree, such as a masters or PhD.

The successful applicant must supply a brief report (no more than one page) on their return and will be expected to present the results of their work at the annual scientific meeting of the SSA. The successful applicant must agree to acknowledge the financial support of the Stroke Society of Australasia in any publications arising from this fellowship. If there are no suitable applications, then no scholarship will be awarded. In exceptional circumstances a runner-up may be awarded $5,000 to help defray the costs of travel and accommodation.

Applications for these awards should be forwarded to The Secretary, Stroke Society of Australasia, PO Box 576, CROWS NEST NSW 1585, Australia.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 31st January 2012.
